Small Town Solidarity by Hazen Woolson

I had mixed feelings about traveling to nearby Loyalton, California to film their Rally For Solidarity event - Loyalton is a small town north of Truckee with roots in ranching and logging. I knew from my friend who invited me it that there was going to be a counter-protest and things could get heated. Nevertheless, I was excited to continue pushing my comfort zone with filming - it was incredible to see what an impact my Truckee Vigil piece made on our community, and I wanted to incorporate more structure into this Loyalton video.

Immediately upon arriving I see big diesel trucks carrying Trump 2020 banners roaring through town, and there’s a palpable tension in the air. The Black Lives Matter protesters are on one side of the small main street, and the All Lives Matter/Trump 2020 protesters are faced off on the other side. Just to make things even more interesting, a third party touting the State of Jefferson flags and hot dogs is thrown in the mix, not wanting to miss out on the action.

And here comes big city Truckee boy with his fancy camera. I felt like at any moment someone would say “You’re not from around here, are you?”

To my relief everyone was fairly nice and respectful of my presence, but that can’t be said of how the two protests treated each other. Unfortunately the All Lives Matter protest was aggressive and disrespectful, even going so far as to throw a dead skunk at their fellow townspeople advocating for the rights of the black community in America. None of it really makes sense to me, and only reaffirms my belief in my work and how much more there is to be done to make real progress in this country.

Truckee Twilight Hyperlapse by Hazen Woolson

As I said in my post, Why haven’t I tried these before? The twinkling of the lights, the car headlights on the roads and the night sky are mesmerizing! I’m so happy with how this turned out after my first try, but I know that the possibilities are endless here and there’s so much more to do and explore! I’m looking forward to getting down to Reno or SF for a few nights.

Dumpster Divers by Hazen Woolson

Last week I reached out to good buddies Andrew Tarca and Keenan Hawkins about filming some biking, with the idea that it would be just a quick after work mission. This trail is right in our neighborhood and is a fun way for them to get some exercise and adrenaline going before it gets dark. I thought it would be interesting to start a small series of videos highlighting how my friends stay active with full-time jobs - it will keep me pushing my craft into new areas, networking with friends and outside having fun. I also think that this idea resonates with a lot of people and could serve as inspiration to get outside and have fun after work. Look for more of these in the future!

SAY THEIR NAMES Truckee Vigil by Hazen Woolson

The peaceful SAY THEIR NAMES Vigil held in Truckee yesterday evening was a powerful show of courage and solidarity in our little mountain town denouncing systemic racism and violence. It allowed us a time to reflect on those killed by police. It allowed us to show our collective desire for change. To stand together and demand a better world. Black lives matter.

I was glad I brought my camera along last night - I had been on the fence, usually feeling uncomfortable in situations with emotional or political weight to them. But I thought it might be helpful to get some shots, and it turned out to be a very fulfilling experience. The camera serves as my voice and vehicle for expression, and enables me to be more confident in situations I normally wouldn’t be. It gives me purpose, and at this moment in history we need these stories being told. It was an honor filming and editing this video, and I hope to do more pieces like this in the future.

Dipsea Trail Vignette by Hazen Woolson

Host to the oldest cross country running race in the US, the Dipsea is a beautiful and storied trail from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach on California's coast. My girlfriend Emilie and I hiked it mid February 2020 just before the coronavirus changed the way the world looked. I brought my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and DJI Mavic 2 Pro along to document the journey. Music licensed from www.MusicBed.com

Kayaking in the Sierra Buttes by Hazen Woolson

My girlfriend and I had a fun today kayaking around the Upper Salmon Lake in the Sierra Buttes, and I brought my drone along to take a few shots. There’s still more snow up there than I thought for May 15th!

Lost Sierra Hoedown Edit Live by Hazen Woolson

Recently the head of the Lost Sierra Hoedown and good friend Drew Fisher reached out with bad news: The Hoedown was officially canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. He asked me to look through the footage I shot from last year’s outdoor bluegrass music festival and put together a piece with a more emotional tone - part sorrow and nostalgia, and part hopeful and forward-looking to next year’s shindig.

It turned into a heartfelt piece about all the different reasons we love the Lost Sierra and the Hoedown: the people, the music, the camping, the outdoors and the fun.

Until next year…

Scratching the Surface on Youtube by Hazen Woolson

Josh Daiek has published Scratching the Surface in its entirety to his YouTube page!

“The winter of 2019 was one for the books in the Sierra Nevada. Record snowfall in February buried the range, filling in lines that only come into play every decade or so. The winter seemed like it would never let up. When it finally did, and the sun poked its head out in mid April, my friend Will Brommelsiek and I decided to take a walk through the mountains to explore some new terrain. 'Scratching the Surface' documents our multi-day adventure as we push further into our backyard and explore new lines.” -Josh Daiek
