"OUT OF SIGHT" Wins Granite Chief's Shreddit Showdown Grand Prize! by Hazen Woolson

OUT OF SIGHT takes the Grand Prize at Granite Chief Ski Shop’s Shreddit Showdown Ski Edit Contest!!!

While Tahoe’s ski season was underwhelming in January and February, we did manage to have two great months of snow in December and March. Then came COVID-19 in mid-March, cutting our already segmented ski season off completely. During the good weather windows, however, we did manage to get out and shoot some backcountry skiing and riding. I compiled the highlights of our 2019/20 season shots into “OUT OF SIGHT,” a backcountry ski and snowboard film.

Squaw's 'Fun In The Sun' Full Edit // for client SnowBrains Films by Hazen Woolson

That’s a wrap! After an amazing day of skiing and filming with athletes Courtney Royce, Anthony Santos, Jed Kravitz and friends at Squaw Valley I got to work editing down this promo piece and I’m super excited about how it turned out. Especially given the lack of snow that we’ve seen so far this season, we made the most of the conditions, skied all over the mountain and had a blast. Thank you to Miles Clark of SnowBrains Films, Bevan Waite of MountainGrown Media and Squaw Valley.

The spring skiing at Squaw Valley, CA this season has been top-notch. Squaw is the Spring Skiing Capital with slushy bumps, cruisy groomers, great park jumps...

Pow Day on the West Shore! by Hazen Woolson

December 15th 2019 dawned blue and cold, with a fresh coating of snow over the Tahoe Basin. Forecasts had called for 6”, and luckily they were wrong - in our favor, to the tune of 16” of light coldsmoke. I tagged along with a few friends on a ski tour up Tahoe’s West Shore and brought my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K along and managed to capture a few shots.

SF Chronicle Puts Hwy 50 Road Gap on Front Cover by Hazen Woolson

Gregory Thomas of the San Francisco Chronicle recently called me up asking for an interview on Josh’s incredible backflip over Hwy 50 outside of South Lake Tahoe, California last year, and Yesterday we made front page news! Front and center was a still from the angle I shot of the death-defying stunt, with Josh soaring 80 feet above the highway as stunned travelers watched on. Here’s to Josh’s legacy as one of Tahoe’s greatest skiers!

Local author and good friend Dave Zook compiled a comprehensive look at the weather over the last decade in Tahoe called ‘Cyclical by Nature’ published in the Tahoe Quarterly. The article featured several photos of mine highlighting the drought years - 2012 through 2015. Take a look!

'7 Stages Of Blank' Wins Best Powder Award! by Hazen Woolson

Take a look at this year’s list of award winners: https://www.powder.com/stories/20th-annual-powder-awards-winners-announced/

Blank Collective Films takes home ‘Best Powder Segment’ at Powder Magazine’s Powder Awards! I am incredibly excited and humbled to have been part of such an incredible team, and to have been in the right place at the right time - Tahoe experienced some of the best winter conditions I’ve ever seen in my 8+ years of living here.

The team included Josh Daiek, Alexi Godbout, Stan Rey, Wilbur Drake, Ming Poon, and Jeff Thomas. The segment is a compilation of storm skiing footage that I filmed in South Lake Tahoe and footage from Mount Baker Ski Area in Washington. We worked tirelessly for 3 weeks during some of the biggest storms in February, led by Josh each day who had detailed knowledge of different zones and always seemed to know where the snow would be best.

The full powder segment can be seen here:

And one of my favorite shots I got of Josh, first run in the morning after 3+ feet of light powder fell overnight:

I’m looking forward to working with the Blank crew again this season!
