Perks Of The Job with Cody Wilkins by Hazen Woolson

This was a super fun project to be a part of for a few reasons. First, Cody is a good friend and amazing human being with many titles; expert skier, mountain biker, surfer, and trail builder to name a few. After living in Tahoe for several years he moved to the greener pastures of Bellingham, WA where he as access to surfing, skiing and most importantly world-class biking. Getting to reconnect and kick it with him in the mountains above Incline Village, NV was a treat.

Second, I really focused a lot on filming mountain biking this summer, which is a genre all its own with a unique editing style and aesthetic that I enjoy and try to emulate. Some of my favorite mtb pieces are put together in a ‘raw’ style, meaning only the audio captured on scene is used, and it conveys a sense of speed and draws the viewer in. I chose to use a song to carry the action, but really emphasized the sounds of Cody and his brother "Hank” Henry Wilkins as they tore down the trail they had been building the last few weeks of the summer.

And third, I got to shoot with Bevan Waite of Mountain Grown Media on the fourth and final day when we captured the shots used in this short film. Bevan is a great friend with an incredible eye for detail and composition - I learn something from him every time we get to shoot together. In this case, it was for a larger project he’s putting together called ‘The Wild Side’ about the different relationships people have with the sport of mountain biking. I won’t give any more away, but I’m excited to see the end product.

'Follow The Forecast' Goes LIVE! by Hazen Woolson

The Blank Collective’s newest award-winning film has just been released for free on Youtube, featuring fast-paced big mountain riding, mountaineering on Mt. Rainier, some of the deepest powder skiing I’ve ever witnessed, and a killer Tahoe segment that Josh Daiek and I worked super hard to put together. Give it a watch, but a warning - you might get too stoked.

Tahoe Mill Collective by Hazen Woolson

Bevan Waite, the man behind Mountain Grown Media based out of Truckee, CA asked me to help with a project and I was more than happy to. The Tahoe Mill Collective is a local co-working space with two locations - one at the base of the Alpine Meadows access road, and a new location recently opened in Tahoe City. Both have incredible access to everything we care about in Tahoe - trails, Lake Tahoe, the Truckee River, skiing and mountain biking.

Bevan and I worked together to film the two locations over the course of 1 day of shooting, and he handled lighting and scripting the interview. After shooting together he handed off the footage to me and I edited, colored and animated the piece.

Cody Wilkins / FlyLow Gear Quick Edit by Hazen Woolson

Over the last few weeks I’ve had the opportunity to work and film for a few different projects which is always fun, but haven’t been posting much. Bevan Waite of Mountain Grown Media is putting together an amazing piece on FlyLow Gear’s mountain bike team and their apparel, and brought me along to film athlete Cody Wilkins in his element, building a new jump trail in Incline Village, NV. These are just a few clips from the 2 days of filming together.

Desert Photography Mission by Hazen Woolson

Friend and fellow creative Matt Bansak recently invited Emilie and I out to a secret desert location for a night of camping and star gazing. Having met Matt long ago, I know that when he comes up with an idea like this it’s usually going to be an amazing photogenic adventure. I usually try to take notes when I hang out with Matt - he’s an extremely talented photographer filled with useful tips and tricks with an eye for surreal environments and beautiful night skies.

Well, this trip was picture perfect. And he even got to go “kite biking” to boot, a new sport he invented on the spot harnessing the power of the wind to pull him across the dry desert lake bed.

Finally... Finished my highlight reel! by Hazen Woolson

This project was so much harder than I thought it would be when I started - it was a big blank canvas, and it all seemed so daunting. Going through my footage was an exercise in patience and perspective. It made me realize how far I’ve come, and allowed me to see where I want to go with my image-making. I’m so thankful to the people, friends and brands I’ve had the pleasure of working with - thank you for your belief in me and the opportunity to grow together.
